Spain : 8 Classic Dishes

During my internship in Spain, I had the opportunity to try a wide variety of local dishes. Spain is reputed to be a land of rich culture, stunning landscapes, and ancient heritage, and traditional dishes. The Spanish cuisine is varied, with a combination of Mediterranean lightness, and rich flavors. You can go eat seafood in seaside villages to the tapas bars, or eat tortillas in a restaurant. What defines Spanish cuisine, these eight dishes should give you the desire to eat. When I was in the internship, I took a gastronomic journey through the heart of Spain with Croquetas, Tortilla Española, Gazpacho, Pisto, Pulpo a la Gallega, Paella, Tapas, and Patatas Bravas.

1.Chicken Croquettes🍗

Croquetas are the most popular of Spanish tapas. Golden, crispy fritters filled with a rich béchamel sauce and blended with such ingredients as shredded chicken, Iberian ham, cod, spinach, or mushrooms, the contrast of crispy outside and creamy inside is irresistible. Croquetas are to be found on every Spanish table and tapas bar.

2.Tortilla Española🍽

Tortilla Española is a satisfying omelet from eggs, potatoes, and occasionally onions. You can eat hot or cold at breakfast, lunch, or dinner. In fact, the recipe varies in every region, making the dish better every time you eat it. What makes it so beloved is that comforting texture and rich taste. Served as wedges or stuffed inside a bocadillo (sandwich), the tortilla is classically Spanish home fare.

3.Gazpacho 🥣

This chilled soup from Andalusia is made of ripe tomatoes, cucumber, green pepper, garlic, olive oil, and vinegar. Pureed to a liquid consistency and refrigerated, it is typically served garnished with croutons or diced vegetables. Gazpacho is healthy, cool, and flavorful.

4.Pisto 🍲

This is the Spain version of ratatouille, Pisto is a stew of vegetables commonly made with zucchini, eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, and onions, slowly cooked in olive oil. The customary topping is a fried egg or bread. It’s especially popular in La Mancha, the region made famous by Don Quixote.

5.Pulpo a la Gallega 🦑

Originating from the northwestern region of Galicia, Pulpo a la Gallega is a plain dish that brings out the natural flavor of the sea. Boiled, chopped soft octopus is placed on a wooden dish with a drizzle of olive oil, coarse sea salt, and smoked paprika. It’s sophisticated, minimalist, and deeply rooted in Spanish culinary tradition. It’s occasionally paired with boiled potatoes (cachelos).

6.Paella🥘

Should there be one dish that comes closest to representing Spanish cuisine globally, then it must be Paella. Originating in Valencia, the original Paella Valenciana comprises rice, chicken, rabbit, green beans, and saffron. Seafood paella is also very famous, especially along the coast, and includes prawns, mussels, clams, and squid. Paella is often prepared during family gatherings or festivals and is cooked widely. The crispy bottom layer of rice, known as socarrat, is the favorite of the majority of Spaniards.

7.Tapas🍴

Tapas are small bites of olives and cheese, shrimp grilled, meatballs, or fried calamari. The idea is to taste a little bit of each with conversation and drinks. Each region specializes in a different specialty of tapas, so every event is special and very localized.

8.Patatas Bravas 🥔

No night of tapas would be complete without a plate of Patatas Bravas. Fried, diced potatoes are typically smothered in hot tomato sauce and sometimes a dollop of aioli. Easy as they are to make, the strong flavor and crunch have captured the heart of the natives and tourists both. Each region puts its own spin on it, from smoky to creamy, hot to mild.
