Moving to Spain? The first step is to get the NIE Number. The NIE is a document issued by the Ministry of the Interior, which is issued to individuals and allows them to carry out any type of legal procedure in Spain.

The NIE is a personal, unique and exclusive number that contains seven numbers and a verification code with letters. This document is necessary to obtain a residence permit, open your business, open a bank account, and even to buy a house or a car.

Please note that if a foreigner residing in Spain does not have the NIE, he/she is considered as a person in an irregular situation from a legal point of view and this rule also applies for European Union citizens.

Who must apply for the NIE?

In order to reside in Spain and be able to apply for the NIE, you must fall into at least one of these categories:

– You have an employment contract
– You are self-employed
– You are a student or you are doing an internship
– You have the economic capacity and have health insurance.

How to obtain the NIE Number?
